DIY Personalized Coffee Mugs!

November 13th, 2012

Did you know, that with a single black permanent marker, you can make your own customized and personalized coffee mug? It’s so simple! All you need is your oven, a cookie sheet, a mug, and a marker. That’s it!

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. While it’s heating up, decorate your mug! First you’ll need a plain mug from any store (Target, Wal-Mart- even the Dollar Store has them!) You can use any kind of permanent marker (though we love Sharpies the best!), in any colors you like. Write your name, design it with hearts and stars- anything you want!!

They also make GREAT gifts for the upcoming holiday season! You can make ones for your mom, dad, grandparents, brother and sister! Just write their name on it and decorate it all up. Once you are finished decorating, place the mug(s) on a cookie sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Carefully take out the mugs when they are done and let them cool. The marker will have been set while in the oven and will not wash off. You now have a personalized coffee mug ready for use!

Here are some creative ideas we came up with for designs on your mug:

-Play with different ways of writing your name on a sheet of paper- print, cursive, dotted, block- and see what you like best to make your mug your own.

-If you are making them for loved ones, decorate the mugs with things they love. If your sister LOVES kitties, draw little kitties peeking over the side of the mug! If your dad loves fishing, draw some fish swimming across the mug!

-Try drawing something that will look silly when you are sipping out of the mug! Like a mustache or an animal nose.

-Holiday mugs are a great idea for everyone. If you have a lot of people to give gifts to and don’t want to do first names, then you can get different colored Sharpies and make winter scenes, Christmas trees, snowmen and snowflakes, reindeer- different scenes on each mug makes each person’s gift a unique one! Or how about drawing Christmas cookies on the mugs, and then giving the mug as a gift with a small tin of homemade Christmas cookies to go with it? Perfect gift!

Are you going to try out this DIY craft? What will you write on your mug?

i was just wondering if can you do the same on glass mug i love this idea but am having a hard time finding a white mug

  • Monique says:

Does anyone know if I can do this with a mug that already has designs on it?

  • Courtney says:

You can find plain, white mugs at the dollar store. I work at a shelter and we did this for an art project. 25 mugs for $25.

I tried this craft and the marker came off even after being baked. I tried washing it with a soft sponge and that was fine, but if you accidentally use the rough side of the sponge the marker will scrub right off. It’s a shame because it is a really cute project.

Acrylic sealing spray (ACSS)will make the maker saty on the mug.
The ACSS works very well with the oil-based paint Sharpie and the design didn’t fade a bit even after dishwashing. With the protective sealant, mugs designed with this method should hopefully last a long time

And you need an “OIL based SHARPIE” get it at Michael’s Craft Stores. and be sure to use the ACSS Sealing paint!
