How To Make A Doll

Creating A Doll For Submission To Cartoon Doll Emporium

1. Draw the doll and clothing on paper, then scan it into the computer.

Note: Draw the doll and the clothing seperately. (View images below)

2. Scan them in in the same resolution/dpi (that way you'll be sure that the clothing fits the doll).

 

3. From there you separate the doll and the clothing in Photoshop or Illustrator.

( If you don’t have these programs, you can download free trials HERE and HERE. )

 

a. Open your scanned images in Photoshop or Illustrator.

 

b. Using the lasso tool trace the edges of your images.

c. After you have finished tracing the image go to Edit and select Copy (or press CTRL + C ).

 

d. Create a new document by going to File and select New (or press CTRL + N).

(Tip: Photoshop automatically specifies the size of the document according to the image you copied)

 

e. Paste your image to the new document by going to Edit and select Paste (or by pressing CTRL + V)

 

f. If your doll has not been colored yet, you can color them using Photoshop. (Heres a link on how to color in photoshop.)

 

4. Time to save the dolls!

 

a. Saving the images has a particular order. First you have to save the doll itself, then the top clothing, the bottom clothing, the dresses, the shoes and then the accessories. Name the images as dollz1, dollz2, dollz3, and so on.

 

b. Go to file and select save for web (or press CTRL + Shift + Alt and S simultaenously)

 

c. This step if for the doll itself. On the save menu select gif, check the transparency box, and choose white for Matte. (View image below)

d. Save the image as dollz1.gif

 

e. To save the clothing use the same procedure on how to save the doll but dont use any matting. Click the matte color box and select None.

 

f. Then save the image as dollz2.gif (name the following images to dollz3.gif, dollz4.gif, dollz5.gif...)

 

g. Repeat the same process for all of the remaining clothing and accessories.

6. Send us the doll maker in .psd and .zip format.
